Details

This course is designed to familiarise the student with the fundamentals of telecommunications as used in modern society. The course begins with an overview of modern telecommunications systems including: the electromagnetic spectrum and the relationships of common services; the need for modulation; the basic principles of AM, FM and PM; the basic principles of radio communications, transmitters, receivers, antennas and propagation paths; the basic principles of television as both video transmission and at RF.

Detailed topics follow, including: wideband amplifiers, tuned amplifiers, class C tuned amplifiers and multipliers, radio frequency oscillators, amplitude modulators, fundamentals of electro-magnetic wave propagation, basic antennas, tuned radio frequency and superhetrodyne receiver principles.

The idea is to demonstrate the overall picture of telecommunications at a simplified level and then begin to fill-in the detail with the specific topics listed. More detail will be found in succeeding courses.

Course Objective

1.             The first objective is to give the student an overview of the field of telecommunications so that the inter-relationships, requirements and need for the detailed topics can be grasped more readily.

The student will then study the detailed topics and will:

2.             Know the circuitry of tuned amplifiers and their impedance matching.

3.             Understand the principles of class C amplifiers and their applications as frequency multipliers.

4.             Learn the characteristics and circuitry of radio frequency oscillators.

5.             Understand the principles of amplitude, frequency and phase modulation.

6.             Understand the principles of radio receivers.

7.             Understand the techniques used in digital communications.

Course Certificate
PETC certificate will be issued to all attendees completing the program.

Unit Outcomes

Successful completion of the following units will enable the student to

1.0     Overview of Telecommunications

1.1     The electro-magnetic spectrum and the relationship of common services such as: low frequency navigation, AM Broadcast, shortwaves, television VHF and UHF, FM broadcast, mobile radio including cellular telephone, VHF and UHF navigation, radar, microwave and satellite links.

The eight subdivisions of the spectrum from VLF to EHF, the concepts of wavelength and frequency are included.

1.2           The need for modulation, including the concept of modulation as one of frequency translation.

1.3           The basic principles of the modulation process; the differences among AM, FM and PM.

1.4           The basic requirements of a radio transmitter: operating frequency, power output, bandwidth, choice of modulation, common practices.

1.5           The basic requirements of a radio receiver: frequency selection and selectivity; sensitivity; signal to noise ratio; bandwidth.

1.6           The basic principles of electro-magnetic wave propagation and the requirements of and for antennas. Basic antenna types: dipoles, monopoles, gain or directive antennas.
