Outline

Typical itinerary of Powerboat Level 2 course
Day 1
09:00
  • Arrive at Xclusive School of Yachting classroom and check in
  • Welcome and Issue of wet weather gear and books
  • Explain the use of the trailer to launch and recover the RIB including consideration of slipway type and hazards such as lee shores
  • Launch the RIB if it is not already in the water
  • Run through the safety equipment required on a RIB or small powerboat including how it is used and maintained
  • Run through the basic checks that should be carried out to both the RIB and outboard engine prior to departure
  • Instructor’s safety briefing and familiarisation talk including the importance of the kill chord and correct stowage of equipment
  • Brief about correct loading and the effect this has on the boats performance
  • Practice some basic close quarters maneuvers such as departing and coming alongside a pontoon taking into account tidal stream and wind
  • Correct use of painters, lines and fenders
  • Understand the importance of having an awareness of other water users
13:00Lunch14:00Continue close quarters handling including turning in a confined area. Learn how to secure to a mooring buoy including approach angle, crew communication, use of a boat hook and how to secure15:30Go out to practice area and learn some high speed manoeuvres such as S and U turns. Understand the use of trim for different speeds and sea conditions.16:30Learn how to anchor including what makes a good anchorage, types of anchor, stowage and attachment to the boat, required depth of water, holding ground, method of approach in various conditions of wind and tide, preparation of the anchor, chain and warp. Learn how to weigh anchor17:00Return to base and finish for the day
Day 2
09:00Classroom session covering the factors needed to consider when planning a short trip. This will include weather information and it’s sources, tidal information and navigational information from charts and almanacs. Plan a short trip as a group. Time will also be spent looking at different types of craft and hull forms and the effect this has on handling. Discussion about the different types of engines and drives including their advantages and disadvantages11:00Carry out pre planned trip to a local harbour such as Cowes12:00Prepare to enter harbour and moor up for lunch. Over lunch there will be a discussion about use and limitations of GPS, handling emergencies such as sinking or being adrift and how to tow or be taken in tow13:00Leave harbour for return trip to Hamble14:00Arrive back at entrance to Hamble and practice Man Overboard including prevention, immediate actions, return to the man and recovery techniques. Each student practices the MOB evolution15:30Arrive back at Hamble and finish with some more close quarters handling followed by clean up and recovery of RIB17:00Debrief and issue of certificates
