Outline of the IELTS exam
The exam consists of four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It can be taken in either academic or general mode.
Listening
The Listening section has four sections. Two of them feature monologues on work- and study-related subjects. The other two are conversations between two, three or four people. The audio recording is played only once; examinees need to listen and write down the answers simultaneously.
Reading
The Reading section comprises three long passages in Academic IELTS which are academically oriented. In contrast, there are several shorter, factual passages dealing with every-day matters and work issues in General IELTS, followed by a longer passage on a topic of a general interest. Each text is followed by questions with a different format: true/false, multiple choice, paragraph headings and others. There are 40 questions in total.
Writing Section
The Academic and General IELTS modes include different writing tasks as well. In Academic IELTS a data analysis task is followed by a composition discussing a given point of view or a problem. General IELTS candidates, on the other hand, need to write a formal, semi-formal or informal letter in task 1 and a composition in task 2.
Speaking
The IELTS speaking exam is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, lasting 11-14 minutes. It is recorded for grading purposes. Examines are initially asked to talk about every-day matters, for example festivals in their country, shopping preferences and healthy lifestyle habits. This is followed by a short talk on a given topic and a discussion of more abstract ideas related to it.
